3-day Itinerary: Learn Horseback Archery (Group Training July 2026)

Train with the Mongolian horseback archers featured on the National Geographic show Superskilled with Eva zu Beck!

When I first heard about horseback archery and the small group reviving this ancient sport in Mongolia, I couldn’t believe my ears. Horse riding is hard enough, and to combine it with letting go of the reins and shooting an arrow at a target, I couldn’t wrap my head around how they do it!

Fast forward to seeing one demonstration of these fierce horse archers in action, and I knew this was something I also had to learn! (It turns out, I’m not alone!)

My training began with on-ground archery, getting down the motions so I could practically do them in my sleep. Repetition after repetition until my fingers knew how to nock an arrow quickly without looking, emphasis on the not looking part!

Next came the more intimidating part, the horse riding. Even though I’ve ridden plenty of Mongolian horses, something about mounting these specially trained steeds seemed especially nerve-wracking. I wouldn’t call myself a great rider, and thankfully the team understands how to take anyone from a beginner to a confident rider in just a few short lessons. You don’t even need to have any riding experience to join this training! The team is there to teach you and give you all the skills and confidence you need.

Eventually combining these two new skills, cantering and shooting arrows at the target, I was amazed how quickly I picked up this sport. In the end, I even surprised (and impressed!) myself. Which I have to admit was a great feeling to walk away with.

Having now practiced this sport for several years, I invite you to come do this 3-day training with the masters I learned from.

They’ll teach you everything you need to know to call yourself a horseback archer. Not only will you learn from some of the best males and females practicing this sport in Mongolia, but they’ll also teach you about Mongolian culture along the way.

My hope is that each of you will take on this challenging sport and proudly take your new skills back home with you. Most people book this training as a solo traveler, so the groups are always fun and interesting!

Accommodation and three meals a day are included at the training camp, which is located in a beautiful open space in the countryside. Archery equipment will be provided, but it’s up to you to wear the appropriate riding attire for this experience.

We look forward to welcoming you to Mongolia, and having you as a part of our training program!

About Mongolian Horses and What to Pack

You should be comfortable around horses to join this 3-day trip.

Mongolian horses are semi-wild, that means they are always on alert and can take off at any moment. While they look short in stature, don’t let them fool you. It’s their stamina and tenacity that once helped Genghis Khan take over one-third of the world.

For this trip you will need to pack these items:

  • Horse riding boots that cover your ankles and shins (this is important!)
  • Warm clothes for the evenings (nights get chilly)
  • Rain gear (jacket and pants)
  • Comfortable pants to ride in (jeans are not recommended)
  • Sunscreen, chapstick, and lotion
  • Bandaids and basic first aid kit (your hands aren’t used to this!)
  • Hat to protect you from the sun

Best thing I have done in decades! Thanks Breanna and thanks to the Mongolian team who hosted us and looked after us. I really enjoyed this adventure. The training was great – I learned so much about using the bow and arrow. My trusted steed, so patient with me as I was learning to stay balanced on his back, cantering or galloping, with my hands occupied by the bow and arrows and my eyes on the target – not where I was going! Highly recommended to the wild and free adventurer types out there

The Horseback Archery tour was such a dream come true, and I truly enjoyed every moment. Breanna’s team made everything super easy to follow, especially for someone like me who has barely stepped out of my country before. Baaska, our horse archery coach, made sure we could learn as many things as we could fit into the 3 days we had, up to the very last moment. I’m so happy to have met the wonderful people that were part of this experience, and can’t wait to go again next year!

This trip was nothing short of life-changing. While it presented a physical challenge that pushed my boundaries, it was a cultural experience that far outweighed the effort. I had knee surgery months before the trip, and was still able to fully participate. A huge element of the journey was overcoming my initial fears—learning to trust both the horses and myself in the saddle. Our instructor was absolutely instrumental in helping me build that self-confidence through patient, expert guidance.

Highlight of our entire Mongolia trip! We loved this entire experience, and I could come back to do just this for the entire trip. Beautiful, cozy camp as well as delicious, local meals. I have little horse riding experience and Baaska had me shooting on horseback at a canter by the end. WHAT?! We even bought a Mongolian trad bow to bring home where we continue to shoot today. Mongolians are/were the most skilled horseback archers in the history of the world, so why not learn from the best
